Prologue
Michael Keehl stood in the Italian office, slipping on the last piece of his thick armor. A tall, robust figure was turned away with a stony expression and twinkling eyes. The curtains were drawn, making the room seem almost underground.
"...You made mistakes in your past...trusting L...thinking you could succeed him...but all of that's behind you, isn't it?" The figure asked, some of his graying hair falling over his eye.
"Yes." Mello said tonelessly.
"You are MY successor now. You know that, don't you?"
"...I do."
The old man smiled coldly and asked, "From now on, will you obey my every order?"
"...I will."
"Will you eliminate my enemies?"
"I will."
The old man smiled darkly and held a red diamond with the Borgognoni Vimercati family crest on it. Mello blinked at it. He knew that once he put that on, it would make him property of this man's family. It included one of his five new-found enemies, but he quickly brushed that thought aside.
